Professor Brett Paull from the University of Tasmania has received the ACGR Award for Excellence in Graduate Research Supervision for his outstanding track record of student-centred, high-impact supervision across more than three decades.
An internationally recognised leader in separation science, Professor Paull brings a practical, impact-focused approach to supervision—centred on building confidence, capability, and pride in research. He has supervised over 50 HDR students to completion, with more than 80% finishing in under four years. His model integrates professional development, global research exposure, and strong support for publishing and presenting. Over 90% of his students share their work publicly before graduating, and many complete their studies with patents or industry-linked outputs.
Professor Paull’s candidates play key roles in major collaborations and ARC Training Centres, with several undertaking internships at Pfizer, Trajan, and Norske Skog. His graduates have progressed into senior academic and industry roles around the world, often remaining active collaborators. With a supervision style grounded in scientific rigour and real-world relevance, Professor Paull has shaped a generation of researchers whose influence extends well beyond the lab.
