SUMMARY:ACGR Webinar 3/2026 - When Does HDR Training Become Work?
DESCRIPTION:From conference support and grant writing to animal care\, lab management and broader project work\, universities are increasingly confronting difficult questions about where HDR research training ends and paid work begins. Recent Fair Work cases\, evolving legal expectations and changing sector norms are exposing institutions to growing legal\, cultural and reputational risk\, often in areas long treated as “normal” research practice. This session will unpack UQ’s journey in developing practical guidance to help supervisors distinguish between research training\, volunteering\, work experience\, placements and paid employment. It will examine the tensions\, pushback and grey areas encountered during consultation\, share the principles and decision-support tools ultimately adopted\, and discuss implementation strategies designed to support supervisors without creating a compliance-heavy framework. \n\n\n\nPresenters:Professor Pierre Benckendorff & Professor Virginia Slaughter\, Deputy Dean & Dean\, University of Queensland Graduate Research School

SUMMARY:ACGR Webinar 4/2026 - Inclusive Support: Strengthening Success for Neurodivergent HDR Candidates
DESCRIPTION:How can we create HDR environments where every candidate has the opportunity to thrive? \n\n\n\nFollowing the release of the ACGR Good Practice Guidelines for Inclusive Supervision of Neurodivergent HDR Candidates\, this webinar explores how inclusive supervision can transform the HDR experience across every stage of candidature. \n\n\n\nJoin us for an engaging discussion on the development of the guidelines\, the evidence and insights that underpin them\, and what meaningful impact looks like in practice. From designing inclusive research and learning environments to equipping supervisors with the tools and confidence to support neurodivergent candidates\, this session will highlight practical approaches to strengthening outcomes for all HDR students. \n\n\n\nWe will also explore the critical role of Graduate Research Schools in leading systemic change through embedding inclusive practices\, supporting supervisors\, and shaping cultures where diverse ways of thinking are recognised as strengths. \n\n\n\nPresenters:Jillian Blacker\, HDR Client Services Manager\, QUTCharlotte Brownlow\, Dean\, Graduate Research School\, UniSQ
