DESCRIPTION:This session draws on a recently published chapter of the same name in the Open Access book Confident Supervisors: Creating Independent Researchers Volume 2. I will give an overview of the chapter content including motivations and intentions as supervisors\, fostering the holistic development of your candidates\, assisting in their career development\, and being part of a culture change to more broadly recognise ‘successful’ doctoral outcomes. We will discuss strategies you can use in your supervision to facilitate your candidate’s professional and career development.   \n\n\n\nPresenterRachel Spronken-Smith is a Professor in Higher Education and Geography and works as Deputy Dean in the Graduate Research School at the University of Otago. She has been a Geography lecturer\, academic developer\, head and dean\, and is now overseeing researcher development. Her current research interests are in doctoral education and doctoral outcomes. She has won several university teaching awards and a national tertiary teaching award in 2015. In 2016 she won the TERNZ-HERDSA medal for Sustained Contribution to the Research Environment in NZ and was a Fulbright Scholar in 2018. In 2026 she gained recognition through the UK Council of Graduate Education for her supervision.

DESCRIPTION:ACGR Webinar 1/ 2026 – Supervisors Who Support: The How of Wellbeing in Higher Degree Research \n\n\n\nHigher degree research is both intellectually rewarding and emotionally demanding. The long timelines\, independence\, uncertainty\, and high expectations placed on Masters and PhD researchers can create unique wellbeing challenges. Within this context\, the supervisor–researcher relationship plays a critical role in shaping not only academic progress but also the overall research experience. \n\n\n\nThis interactive workshop introduces a practical approach to supporting wellbeing in higher degree research through the development of wellbeing literacy — the intentional use of language\, awareness\, and practices that support wellbeing for both supervisors and researchers. At the centre of the workshop is a self-care toolbox framework\, which recognises that no single strategy can address the diverse challenges experienced during the research journey. Instead\, supervisors and researchers benefit from developing a range of approaches that can be drawn upon at different times. The workshop focuses on five dimensions of self-care — self-compassion\, mindful awareness\, time\, habits\, and empowerment — which represent the practical “how” of wellbeing. These dimensions offer accessible entry points for supervisors to engage in supportive conversations\, recognise wellbeing needs\, and help researchers develop sustainable practices across the research journey. \n\n\n\nThrough guided reflection and small-group discussion\, participants will explore how these five dimensions can be applied within supervision contexts and identify practical strategies to support both researcher wellbeing and academic progress. I’ve worked across early childhood\, schools\, higher education\, arts and cultural organisations\, with public health organisations and non for profits\, and community settings. This breadth has taught me one thing clearly – wellbeing isn’t one-size-fits-all\, but it is something we can all learn. \n\n\n\nI write books\, host podcasts\, create resources\, and run workshops that make self-care accessible and human. I’m particularly passionate about supporting women to prioritise themselves without the guilt. \n\n\n\nI believe the small\, intentional moments of self-care are where real transformation happens.

Despite the contribution they make to university research impact outcomes\, graduate researchers may not receive the same inductions as research staff\, and may not always know how to demonstrate their impact\, or why they should aim to do so. \n\n\n\nThis webinar offers insights from a program of development workshops and resources co-developed between La Trobe University and Cruxes Innovation designed to help graduate researchers understand the impact of their work. It explains our approach to linking impact to other discourses\, especially discussions around post-HDR careers. However\, the ability to adapt supervision to accommodate diverse learners has not always been agile\, and more focus needs to be placed on adapting positive supervision practices for neurodivergent HDR students. \n\n\n\nJoin us on Friday 23rd May for a webinar focusing on adapting and developing good practice supervision techniques for working with neurodivergent HDR students. The webinar will be facilitated by Professor Charlotte Brownlow\, Dean of the Graduate Research School\, University of Southern Queensland\, and will draw on a recent systematic literature review exploring the experiences of neurodivergent HDR students\, co-authored by a neurodiverse research team.

DESCRIPTION:Growing a graduate research program depends on dozens of factors. One important issue is the capacity of universities to provide enough qualified principal or senior supervisors to accommodate any increases in demand (or simply meet threshold supervision responsibilities in a rapidly changing tertiary environment). \n\n\n\nOne response to this challenge is the creation of acceleration pathways whereby early and mid-career researchers can meet the institutional qualification of ‘principal supervisor’ in less than a full candidature period. How do these programs work? Where have universities developed nuanced models? Beyond capacity measures\, do accelerator programs bring broader benefits to graduate research culture? What quality and compliance issues need to be considered? How are such programs approved? \n\n\n\nJoin us for a panel conversation that will consider the key practical and philosophical issues linked to the fast-track option of becoming a senior supervisor. DESCRIPTION:ACGR was delighted to present another of its national programs specifically designed to support Associate and/or Deputy Deans of Graduate Research\, HDR Directors or equivalent and other academics aspiring to senior graduate research portfolio roles. \n\n\n\nProgram \n\n\n\nExplore the program \n\n\n\nThe program was facilitated by experienced Deans of Graduate Research. Participants developed a toolkit of knowledge and skills required to lead and manage graduate research programs at institutional or faculty/college level. \n\n\n\nThis program provided a unique opportunity to learn from leaders in the field and focused on network building\, providing an opportunity to mix and mingle (virtually) with current Deans and Directors from across Australia. \n\n\n\nParticipants included: \n\n\n\n\nDeans of Graduate Research new to the role\, and\n\n\n\nAssociate/Deputy Deans of Graduate Studies (or equivalent) responsible at institutional or faculty/college level\n\n\n\nHDR coordinators and others with aspirations for these roles and current involvement in Graduate Research leadership at school or department level\n\n\n\n\nThis program is provided to universities that are members of the Australian Council of Graduate Research and three places were available to each member institution for $115 (+GST) per registration. DESCRIPTION:Developing an admission equivalence framework\n\n\n\nThe creation of diverse entry pathways to HDR programs supports the growth of underrepresented groups\, as well as those embedded in industry who are seeking to upskill. A shift towards competency-based approaches to assessing HDR program admission eligibility over academic qualifications is one approach to diversify entry pathways\, aiming to increase access and opportunity.  \n\n\n\nIn 2023 Griffith University created a framework to evidence the research competencies of HDR applicants based on the knowledge\, skills and capabilities that may be assessed as equivalent\, aligned to the AQF Qualification Learning Outcomes.  This approach improved access to applicants who do not hold the requisite qualification\, such as applicants with a disability for example\, whose circumstances have impacted their educational outcomes but are able to evidence alternate research preparedness. \n\n\n\nPresented by the Griffith Graduate Research School team\, this webinar will outline how this equivalence framework model works at Griffith University\, and the successes\, challenges and insights gleaned. \n\n\n\nAs an outcome of this webinar attendees will also be invited to participate in a HDR admission equivalency Community of Practice (CoP)  for staff who are engaged in this space and wish to share sector insights\, and work towards best practice approaches.  \n\n\n\nView the recording on the members section of the website.

DESCRIPTION:On 7 May 2024\, Professor Tania Crotti of the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Adelaide presented this webinar and discussed the successes and insights gleaned from the Higher Degree by Research (HDR) Supervision Community of Practice (CoP)\, outlining how this model works at the University of Adelaide and how the CoP is contributing to raising the quality of supervision across the university. \nThe Higher Degree by Research (HDR) Supervision Community of Practice (CoP) – also known as the ‘HDR CoP’ is a community of academic\, research and professional staff who are engaged in the supervision of research students at MPhil or PhD level at the University of Adelaide. \nBy nature\, a Community of Practices’ goal is to be an inclusive\, supportive environment in which to share experiences of supervision. Their members include supervisors and HDRs beginning their journey\, those more experienced and the professional staff that support the journey. The HDR CoP offers a forum to share the experience of and the approach to supervision as well as a platform to provide resources. The new curriculum went live in 2023. The curriculum redevelopment was lead by the School of Graduate Research and aimed to address some delivery issues in the existing curriculum through the development of high-quality digital assets to enable global delivery but more importantly\, to educate and support candidates in the principles of research translation and impact from the outset of the research\, not as an afterthought. \n\n\n\nThe project has delivered a consistent curriculum across the university with substantial components of curriculum shared across disciplines. The curriculum redevelopment project also supported a refresh of the co-curricular offerings and the introduction of a new platform (Inkpath) to support their delivery. \n\n\n\nIn this webinar\, the RMIT team will outline the principles underpinning the curriculum and co-curricular offerings and some of the challenges in taking (and delivering) a whole of university approach to curriculum redevelopment. Prior to Queen’s he served as the Interim Dean and Associate Vice-President Graduate in the Faculty of Graduate Studies at York University. The recipient of many awards and fellowships\, including Fulbright\, Killam\, SSRC\, and SSHRC\, Dr. Quadir held academic positions at several other universities in the USA\, Canada\, and Bangladesh and has edited/co-edited five books and published extensively in various peer-reviewed journals on cosmopolitan citizenship\, South-South cooperation\, emerging donors\, aid effectiveness\, good governance\, civil society\, democratic consolidation\, transnational social movements\, human security and regional development. In 2007\, he was presented with the York University-Wide Teaching Award for teaching excellence from the full-time faculty category. As recognition of his continued effort to evolve teaching and research into a transnational academic enterprise\, he was given York University’s inaugural Internationalization award in 2003. He is President Elect and Vice-President for the Canadian Association for Graduate Studies (CAGS). Dr.  Quadir served as the chair of Ontario Council of Graduate Studies (OCGS) and is currently serving on the Board of OCGS. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProfessor Jocelyn DeJong is a social scientist and professor of public health\, who currently serves as Associate Provost at the American University of Beirut (Lebanon).  In the latter role\, she directs the Graduate Council which is the focal entity on campus for graduate education\, runs a platform for the major institutional scholarship programs and contributes to the advancement of research across the university. The Graduate Council is active in graduate student recruitment\, both in Lebanon and internationally\, on the graduate student experience and on the professional and career development of graduate students.  Jocelyn has been working on expanding access to higher education for refugees and led the successful grantwriting to establish a university-wide research chair and program on forced displacement.   \n\n\n\nJocelyn is Canadian but has worked in the Middle East and North Africa for most of her professional life.  She holds a BA magna cum laude in Social Anthropology from Harvard University\, MPhil in Development Studies from the Institute of Development Studies\, University of Sussex (UK)\, and a PhD in Health Policy from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (University of London).  As an undergraduate\, she did ethnographic fieldwork in the Canadian arctic among the Inuit\, and for her doctoral work she did fieldwork in Jordan.   \n\n\n\nJocelyn worked for the Ford Foundation in Cairo as program officer for reproductive health between 1992 and 1999\, covering primarily Egypt and the occupied Palestinian territories but travelling widely in the Middle East and North Africa.  Then then transitioned to academia\, when she taught international development with a focus on gender and health at the University of Manchester (UK) for five years. She joined the Faculty of Health Sciences at the American University of Beirut in 2005 and served as its Associate Dean from 2013 to 2021 before transitioning to her current role.   \n\n\n\nHer research areas address women’s health and well-being\, gender and population\, and the impact of conflict and forced displacement on women’s and adolescents’ health.  She has conducted studies in various countries of the Middle East region\, ranging from community-based to health-care institution research on a variety of topics.  She coordinated a major regional multidisciplinary research network on gender and health in the Arab countries and Turkey called the Reproductive Health Working Group for 12 years until 2019.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProfessor Justin Zobel is a Redmond Barry Distinguished Professor in the School of Computing and Information Systems and Pro Vice-Chancellor (Graduate and International Research)\, in which role he oversees the University’s graduate research training and international research partnerships. In the research community\, Professor Zobel is best known for his role in the development of algorithms for efficient web search and for his contributions to robust research methodologies\, and is the author of three highly regarded textbooks on graduate study and research practice. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n..\n\n\n\n\n\nA/Prof Tim Scott received his PhD in Materials Engineering from Monash University in 2006. Upon concluding a postdoctoral research position at the University of Colorado\, Boulder\, he accepted a research assistant professorship within the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder. In 2011\, he joined the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Michigan as a tenure-track assistant professor and was promoted to associate professor by the University of Michigan Board of Regents in 2018. He accepted a position at Monash University in 2019 and is currently Associate Dean Graduate Research in the Faculty of Engineering and Associate Professor (Research) with joint appointments in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Department of Materials Science and Engineering\, and is an ARC Future Fellow. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProfessor Suzanne Ortega serves as President of the Council of Graduate Schools (CGS). The only U.S. higher education association devoted solely to graduate study\, CGS has nearly 500 U.S. and Canadian members and 29 international affiliates. A sociologist by training\, Ortega’s research focuses on social inequality\, mental health\, and graduate education. Prior to assuming her current position\, she served as the University of North Carolina Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs (2011–14). Previous appointments included the Executive Vice President and Provost at the university of New Mexico\, Vice Provost and Graduate Dean at the University of Washington\, and the University of Missouri. The author of numerous articles and book chapters\, Ortega’s masters and doctoral degrees in sociology were completed at Vanderbilt University. She has served on review panels for NSF and NIH\, has been the principal investigator or co-investigator on grants totaling more than $15 million in state\, federal\, and private foundation funds. Ortega has served on a number of professional association boards and committees\, including the Graduate Record Exam (GRE)\, the National Academies of Science Committee on Revitalizing Graduate STEM Education for the 21st Century\, and the National Science Foundation’s Human Resources Expert Panel. In addition\, she is currently a board member of the American University of the Emirates\, serves on Advisory Councils for the Vanderbilt University Graduate School and the Societies Consortium on Sexual Harassment in STEMM. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProfessor Imelda Whelehan is Dean of the Graduate Research School at University of Western Australia and has held similar roles at the Australian National University and the University of Tasmania. Since 2022 she has been President of the Australian Council for Graduate Research.  A feminist literature and film scholar\, she is co-editor of the Oxford journal Adaptation and has published widely in the areas of feminist thought\, popular culture and adaptation studies. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProfessor Denise Cuthbert is the Associate Deputy Vice Chancellor\, Research Training and Development at RMIT. During her time in this role\, she has more than doubled the size of the HDR cohort and diversified the international cohort\, with both onshore and offshore (partnered  delivery). Denise is also an accomplished supervisor\, with over 50 graduate completing under her supervision. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProfessor Virgina Slaughter is founding Director of the Early Cognitive Development Centre within the School of Psychology at the University of Queensland.  She was Head of the School of Psychology from 2013 – June 2023.  A developmental psychologist by training\, Virginia’s research focuses on social and cognitive development in infants and young children.  Professor Slaughter has been recognized with several awards throughout her career\, including the University of Queensland Teaching Excellence Award (1999)\, the University of Queensland Foundation Research Excellence Award (2004)\, and an Australian Award for University Teaching in the category Teaching Large First Year Classes (2006).  She is a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia\, a Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science\, and a Fellow of the Queensland Academy of Arts and Sciences. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr Ahmad Abdullah Al-Aown is the Dean of Graduate Studies at Qatar University since August 2020 . \n\n\n\nDr Ahmad worked as a coordinator of the Fiqh and Usul Al- Fiqh master program\, a member of the Strategic Planning and Development Committee that develop and implemented the new strategic plan of the College of Sharia\, he worked as chairman of the Public Relations and Media Committee\, and as a member of the Executive Committee of the College Sharia\, of the Executive Committee of the Faculty of Sharia\, The Committee for the Development of Islamic Economics and Finance curriculum\, a member of a group of committees working on the initiatives of the new strategic plan of Qatar University\, chairman of the curriculum and courses committee in the Office of Graduate Studies\, a member of the academic planning committee at the university level. \n\n\n\nHe also served on the Committee of The Attributes and Competencies of Qatar University Graduates as well as a member and chairman of a group of committees for the development of new programs in graduate studies\, a member of the Strategic Planning Committee for Scientific Research in the Office of the Vice-President for Research and Graduate Studies\, he was a member of the Selection Committee for Graduate Assistants\, a member of the development and Follow-up Committee for PhD Programs in the Health Cluster. \n\n\n\nHe oversees the review\, evaluation and academic quality assurance process for Graduate programs\, as well as the process of evaluating learning outcomes for graduate programs at the university\, follow-up and development of improvement plans\, as well as work on the strategic plan for graduate studies and graduate frameworks at the university\, and supervisory frameworks with Qatar university`s partner universities. \n\n\n\nHe also worked on joint committees with a group of stakeholder for Qatar University\, such as Qatar Olympic Committee\, Qatar Leadership Center\, Jawaan Bin Jassim College of Leadership and Joint Staff\, as well as served as chairman of the Committee for the Establishment of the Jawaan Bin Jassim Academy of Defense Studies of the Ministry of Defense.. In 2018 and 2019\, he participated in graduate and development conferences in the United States of America organized by the CGS. He Also participated in a workshop in Atlanta on international academic accreditation at SACS-COC. \n\n\n\nDr. Ahmad also participated in a series of workshops and committees at Qatar University on the development of faculty\, follow-up the university’s strategic plan\, and review and develop the regulations for graduate studies. He has received a research grant from Georgetown Dr. Ahmad had a follow ship from Georgetown University (Centre for Regional Studies)\, Doha Branch\, and has number of researches in a series of specialized conferences and journals. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Janet C. Rutledge has served as the vice provost for graduate education and dean of the graduate school at the University of Maryland\, Baltimore County (UMBC) in Baltimore\, Maryland\, USA\, since 2009. She is also a faculty member in the Computer Science and Electrical Engineering Department. Under Rutledge’s leadership\, the Graduate School at UMBC manages the full “lifecycle” of a graduate student from recruitment and admissions to progressions and graduation. The graduate student development unit has recently expanded toinclude postdoctoral affairs. \n\n\n\nRutledge received the B.S. in electrical engineering from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. She received the M.S. and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech). Her primary research area is modeling and compensating for the effects of sensorineural hearing loss and other communication disorders. Rutledge serves on the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Board of Trustees\, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Minority Ph.D. Program Advisory Committee and chaired the U.S. Council of Graduate Schools (CGS) Ad Hoc Advisory Committee on Strengthening Connections to Postgraduate Education in the Global South. She formerly served on the CGS Board of Directors\, the TOEFL Advisory Boardand the GRE Advisory Board (Chair 2017-18).

SUMMARY:ACGR Graduate Research Leadership Program 2023
DESCRIPTION:ACGR is delighted to present another of its national programs specifically designed to support Associate and/or Deputy Deans of Graduate Research\, HDR Directors or equivalent and other academics aspiring to senior graduate research portfolio roles. \n\n\n\nThis online event will take place over two half-day workshops on 17-18 October\, 11am-4:00pm AEDT. \n\n\n\nParticipants may include: \n\n\n\n\nDDOGS™ new to the role in 2023\, and\n\n\n\nAssociate/Deputy Deans of Graduate Studies (or equivalent) responsible at institutional or faculty/college level\n\n\n\nOthers with aspirations for these roles and current involvement in Graduate Research leadership at school or department level\n\n\n\n\nThe program will be facilitated by experienced DDOGS and participants will develop a toolkit of knowledge and skills required to lead and manage graduate research programs at institutional or faculty/college level. \n\n\n\nThis program will provide a unique opportunity to learn from leaders in the field and  focus on network building\, providing an opportunity to mix and mingle (virtually) with current Deans and Directors from across Australia. \n\n\n\nThis program is provided to universities who are members of the Australian Council of Graduate Research and three places only are available to each member institution at a cost of $100 (+GST) per registration. Any Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander aspiring graduate research leaders are welcomed as additional delegates. Individuals registering without endorsement from the Dean/PVC or equivalent from their university will be declined.
